Alex Morante (b.1994, USA) is a London-based artist currently in residence at the Tracey Emin Foundation Victoria House in Margate. Working in figurative ceramic sculpture, she depicts distorted beasts and bodies drawn from her subconscious and the dark imagery found in mythology, science fiction, and religious iconography. She explores the familiar discomforts of anxiety, vulnerability, and monstrosity, with the grotesque and the abject serving as central references.
A diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis has further shaped her practice, creating a hyper-awareness of instability within both internal and external worlds, while influencing the forms she creates and methods of making. She builds complex surfaces using oxides layered with crystalline and crater glazes, evoking mould, lichen, rust, and verdigris. Kiln and chemistry function as collaborators; the unpredictable nature of ceramic processes becomes a way of directly manifesting psychological and physical states on the form, embedding experiences of deterioration, transformation, and endurance within the material.
Alex holds a BA (Hons) in Ceramic Design from Central Saint Martins (2025). Recent awards include the Mawddach Residency Graduate Award (2026) and the Jenny Walton Masters Award (2023).
